The American West is expansive with endless panoramic views and it hosts the majestic Rocky Mountains that seem insurmountable. When Julie and Brandon reached out and told us they wanted an intimate, Colorado, mountain wedding — somewhat secluded, somewhat exclusive, but with all of the luxurious resort amenities to make the weekend complete for their guests, we knew there was one location that fulfilled all of their desires.
On the summit of Cheyenne Mountain, 3,000 feet above The Broadmoor, a mountain resort in Colorado Springs with a lineage that stretches back more than a century, lies a special, off the grid, stunning retreat. Spencer Penrose, the founder of The Broadmoor, had a private lodge built to host his friends and associates during prohibition. Penrose had already made a fortune in mining, and the remote location of his lodge made it the perfect place to entertain guests from the city and imbibe in contraband spirits without worry. Our couple knew that the story-filled setting of this place, called Cloud Camp, would make the ideal spot for their head above the clouds wedding.
At John Tobey Events, we know to create a magical everlasting story, every wedding and celebration needs elegant, personal details, subtle touches and a ton of special events leading up to and including the big day.
In this case, the couple began the celebration days before the wedding. The excitement built as family and friends enjoyed dinners out, golf outings, spa services at the main resort and much more. Julie and Brandon got to relax and spend special time with their friends and family enjoying The Broadmoor experience before everyone was whisked up to Cloud Camp in Escalades. These positive moments leading up to the wedding day set the tone for a remarkable experience.
The ceremony took place on the wrap-around deck—it’s hard to find a more dramatic setting than 360 degrees of mountains vistas as a backdrop. At 8,500 feet above sea level, it’s not an exaggeration to say that this couple was truly married in the clouds.

The reception was stunning. Our team transformed the space from a Western heritage lodge to a romantic, soft atmosphere. Flickering beeswax tapers in hurricane lamps brought intimacy and a warm glow that allowed guests to relax and take it all in. Creams and blush florals accented with vintage containers and rough-hewn silk linens provided the perfect counterpoint to the rustic, wooden beams that arched above.
Spencer the Bear, the Founder’s namesake, took a swipe at the cake (or perhaps the Executive Pastry Chef just made it look like that happened,) a nod to the couple’s sense of play. We were surprised that guests danced late into the night after a full day of mule rides, archery, hikes, and pickle ball.
It was such a pleasure to bring our creative and imaginative work to this mountain wedding venue. Julie and Brandon forever added their wedding story to the legacy of Cloud Camp.
